Help! I’ve Got A Stye in My Eye!

They may be unsightly, but styes are harmless and disappear on their own within a few weeks. Styes are caused by blockages in eyelid oil glands which prevent the natural secretion from those glands. Do not try to squeeze or pop styes around your eyes; as you run the risk of spreading infection.

Avoid using makeup or contacts while you have a stye. Instead, place a hot washcloth over your eye three to four times a day (for 10 -15 minutes each time - you will likely need to reheat the washcloth every couple of minutes) until your stye goes away.  If it does not go away, surgical drainage may be needed.

If your symptoms worsen or persist, you should probably schedule an appointment with your ophthalmologist.
