Treat and Prevent Pesky Springtime Allergies

Spring is in the air – and it’s not the only thing. As temperatures rise and flowers bloom, seasonal allergies are in full effect, leaving you frustrated and uncomfortable. The sudden influx of springtime pollen causes your body’s immune system to overreact to the allergen and thus, flood the eyes with disease-fighting cells. Aside from the sneezing and sniffling, you may experience blurred vision and sensitive skin due to swollen, itchy, and watery eyes. So what can you do to treat and prevent these pesky allergens?

  • Reduce exposure. Stay indoors when pollen counts are high and drive with your car windows up. Avoidance is the quickest way to relief.
  • Take antihistamine. From over-the-counter products like Claritin, Zyrtec and Allegra, to prescribed medicines from eye care professionals, antihistamines are a great treatment and preventative for the allergy blues.
  • Use eye drops. Prescription eye drops as well as over-the-counter products are highly effective. Avoid decongestant eye drops such as Visine, however, as they may worsen your eye allergy symptoms.
  • Try comfort remedies. Apply a cold compress to alleviate any swelling and/or burning sensations. Avoid bright lights and wear sunglasses whenever you’re outside.
  • Leave them alone. Wash your eyes with only warm water and avoid wearing makeup. Switch from contact lenses to eyeglasses, and stop rubbing your eyes.

If symptoms worsen, contact your ilumin ophthalmologist. We can prescribe eye drops and antihistamine medications appropriate to your specific allergies.
